Hair Restoration Surgery vs. Hair Loss Medications

Tremendous advancements have been made in the field of hair restoration from hair transplant surgeries to FDA approved medications that stimulate hair growth and reduce hair loss. Many people are under the misinformation that these treatments are mutually exclusive of one another; when in fact the opposite is true. Medications are often prescribed by hair restoration surgeons before and after surgery. In this article we will clarify misconceptions on hair treatments that have not been proven and provide the facts on approved medications for hair loss.
Medicine has made tremendous strides in the treatment of men's hair loss. The advent of 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors such as the medicine sold under the brand name Propecia and the evolution of surgical hair restoration, for many, living with noticeable hair loss is no longer inevitable. For the first time in the human story, we can stop or slow the progression of hair loss. Through advance hair restoration surgical procedures we can replace lost hair with completely attractive natural results.
It is important to recognize and understand that the majority of hair loss treatments being marketed today are still nothing but "snake oils." Or products that only have anecdotal support in regards to their effectiveness. Ads in the back of men's magazines, radio commercials and infomercials promoting miraculous hair loss treatments.. The untold truth (now told) is that the vast majority of these advertised "treatments" do not effect the prevention and treatment of hair loss.
Bona-fide hair loss treatments are either approved by the FDA or recommended by The American Hair Loss Association while approval is being sought. Hair loss is most successfully treated through early intervention. It is important to undergo a professional medical evaluation and to begin treatment under professional recommendation. The remainder of this article will review the two treatments clinically proven to successfully treat hair loss varying degrees.

Finasteride, Proscar/Propecia

Finasteride is the generic name for the brand name drugs Proscar and Propecia. Finasteride was originally developed by Merck as a drug to treat enlarged prostate glands (Proscar). During the trials on men with prostate problems an intriguing side effect of hair growth was observed. Since finasteride had already been approved by the FDA to treat enlarged prostates in men, Merck and Company decided to pursue the possibility of developing finasteride as the first pill to treat male pattern baldness. On December 22, 1997 the FDA approved a 1mg dose of finasteride for the treatment of androgenic alopecia in men (male pattern baldness). Propecia is the first drug in history to effectively treat male pattern baldness in the vast majority of men who use it.

How to Treat Balding Hair -- powered by ehow

Understanding How Propecia/Finasteride Effects Hair Loss

In a 5-year study of men with mild to moderate hair loss, 2 out of 3 of the men who took 1 mg of finasteride daily regrew some hair, as measured by hair counts. In contrast, all of the men in the study who were not taking finasteride lost hair.[1] Finasteride's hair-raising success is due to its ability to specifically inhibit Type II 5-alpha-reductace, the enzyme that converts testosterone into a more potent androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Propecia's 1 mg dose of finasteride can effectively lower DHT levels by as much as 60% when taken daily. It is DHT that shrinks or miniaturizes the hair follicle, which eventually leads to baldness. This 60% reduction in DHT has
proven to stop the progression of hair loss in 86% of men taking the drug during clinical trials. 65% of trial participants experienced what was considered a substantial increase in hair growth.
The only truly proven effective medically proven way to arrest the hair loss process is to lower DHT levels. The American Hair Loss Association recommends finasteride as the first line of attack for all men interested in treating their male pattern baldness.

Minoxidil (loniten)

Minoxidill, in pill form, was widely used to treat high blood pressure. People taking the medication were surprised to find that they were growing hair in unexpected places like on their cheeks and the back of their hands, some even grew hair on their foreheads. As happens in science in medicine we learn through an unintended consequence. Thus, Minoxidil (loniten) was the first drug approved by the FDA for the treatment of male pattern baldness.
As in finasteride researchers discovered a very interesting side effect of the drug. Some enterprising researchers had the notion that applying minoxidil topically, directly on the head, might grow hair on balding areas. Well it did this to varying degrees depending on the extent of the hair loss. For it's time, this treatment was revolutionary.
Minoxidil proved clinically to slow the progression of hair loss and regrow some hair. Today, most hair restoration doctors consider it a marginally effective drug in the cessation of hair loss. Minoxidil has no effect on the hormonal process of hair loss so its positive effects are at best temporary. Long term results are often unsatisfactory to the patient.
The American Hair Loss Association still recommends the drug for those who have not responded favorably to finasteride treatment or for those who would like to add another product to their regimen. The AHLA does not recommend minoxidil as the first line of attack for men suffering with male pattern baldness, but does recognize it as an effective treatment for a small percentage of its users.
Beverly Hills and Los Angeles top hair restoration centers and surgeons effectively combine use of medications in providing their patients with highly successful naturally appealing results through hair restoration. Hair restoration as a medical specialty has seen rapid advancement over the past several years with more anticipated in the near future. The newest technological developments hair restoration in instrumentation and procedure combined with the passion and skill of hair restoration surgeons’ bolds well for hair loss sufferers.

How to find a good Hair Transplant Surgeon

How to find a good Hair Transplant Surgeon might be a question for many people who suffer from hair loss and need hair restoration services. There are many resources to find a good hair restoration surgeon. One is the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) that you can find a doctor in your area, but you still need to research the doctor to find out more about his practice and whether or not he is a good choice for you.
Dr. Parsa Mohebi profile in ISHRS is an example of the hair transplant surgeon profiles that you can see and contact them. There are several other websites like American Board of Hair Restoration surgery that could be used as a resource to find a board certified hair transplant doctors like Dr. Mohebi.
Los Angeles is known as the Mecca of cosmetic surgery. Hair restoration is not an exception to this rule and the demand for high quality hair transplant surgeries attracted the best hair transplant surgeons to Los Angeles and Beverly Hills in particular.
Location by itself is not a good way to find a good hair transplant surgeon. Are all Beverly Hills hair transplant surgeons capable of providing high quality hair restoration procedures? I guess we all know the answer to this question. In fact, Beverly Hills, like any other high end cities, attracts a mixed crowd of both “good and bad” specialists. Truth is some mediocre hair transplant surgeons only established their hair restoration clinics in Beverly Hills for financial gain from the patients who don’t have time to do their homework before choosing their hair transplant surgeon.
Hair transplant is considered a permanent procedure and, good or bad, the results stay with you for the rest of your life. As much as a good hair transplant can remove years from your face and restore the beauty of it, a bad hair transplant looks unnatural and stands out as unreal. Dr. Parsa Mohebi performs a few hair transplant repairs every month for hair transplants that are done with the old techniques that were once considered the standard of care.
What’s more disappointing is some of those hair transplants are done only recently and by hair transplant surgeons that could not adapt to the new techniques of hair transplant surgery. Many micro-graft hair transplants is seen done only one or two years ago which means there are some doctors out there that resist or are unable to learn the new techniques of hair restoration. Those procedures leave patients with unnatural looking hair and forces them to get another surgery to correct the pluggy appearance.
The good news is that having a bad hair transplant is not the end of the world and if your donor area was not violated badly, your transplanted hair can almost always be repaired with a follicular unit transplant that is artistically done by a good hair transplant surgeon whether in Beverly Hills or elsewhere.

Tough Job Market and Hair Transplants

Once again I am answering a question a patient of one of our California hair transplant centers. The writer of the question has visited a hair transplant open house and was amazed to see a huge turnout considering that we are in recession. There has bee reports of slowing down according to the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery in different fields. The waiting room was found to be full of guys who were willing to spend a large amount of money a piece to restore what genetics has taken.

He mentions that men may have other incentives for getting a hair transplant done these days. And that is due to the more competitive job market. The article quotes Dr. Rassman as: “Society discriminates against bald people. If you have two people coming in for a job, and one of them is partly bald, you’ll think that the one with hair has more youth and vitality.” He continues as “Many full-headed people have a hard time understanding the problems of balding people.” The author talks to several balding men requiring hair restoration information at his hair transplant clinic. One of the patients said, a more youthful appearance would definitely improve his chances if one had to start looking for work, which he hopes won’t happen any time soon, but you never know with the way things are.

He continues, with hair-transplant surgery, healthy hair is removed from the back of the head where the hair is considered permanent and replanted up top. Sometimes it grows in nice and evenly. Other times, you have to grow it long where it takes root and settle for a comb over. And other times, judging from some websites out there, things can go very wrong and you’re worse off than when you began. Potential patients will want to shop around carefully. Rahul Gupta, 28, works as a mechanical engineer for a company he’d rather not name. (”We do a lot of defense work,” he explained.) Like David, he’s mindful of how a hirsute appearance can influence one’s career prospects.

After reading the article, I thought I personally had many patients whom had visited our Orange County hair restoration office as soon as they heard that they are being laid off from their job. The job market is tight now, but there are plenty of opportunities in getting what you want at discounted rates. For example, the standby program can give plenty of discount on the cost of hair transplant to help people who can be flexible with their schedules and fill the openings. If you are competing with a lot of qualified candidates that just lost their job, you need to use any help you can possibly get to become more competitive.

Patchy Hair Loss Causes

As we see patients in our Orange County, California office, we also receive emails from patients across the United States and overseas but this one is worth bringing on here: “I am 36 years old … I have had Alopecia Areata (AA) since12” and have been using prescribed topical and even tried hormonal injections to correct my condition. “Hairs goes in patches from all over the body …” and “I feel itching on the place from where hairs are going to fall with pain on the itching area.”
The condition of this patient is represented by patchy hair loss which is very similar to Alopecia Areata (AA) but AA is normally painless and does not cause skin discoloration. His condition may be more closely linked to Alopecia Cicatricial. Alopecia Cicatricial can cause skin inflammation and then cause hair in the affected area to fall out. His hair loss can be diagnosed through a skin and scalp biopsy that can be conducted by a good dermatologist. Once the results are in we can then review and evaluate to situation and further make a plan of attack to prevent or stop future hair loss.

What did we do at US Hair Restoration

Last year for US Hair Restoration was something to behold and to attest and accredit for what is to come this year. US Hair Restoration has grown immensely and continues to play an important role in the continued research for hair loss and hair restoration as well as a continued and active role at an international level.
Dr. Parsa Mohebi is an educator and an inventor and has had the opportunity to present his lecture on Psycho-social impacts of hair restoration surgery on men at an annual meeting for the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS). This event is highly regarded as one of the most important events in the hair restoration field.
Dr. Mohebi has had two of his personal articles, Psychology of Hair Transplants and How to Assess Scalp Laxity, published on this journal as their cover article within the last year. We appreciate the helps from Dr. Rassman, Medical Director of New Hair Institute and coauthor of the articles, and Dr. Jae pack for his help with the technical aspect of our invention, the Laxometer.
I was given the chance to present a lecture on Psycho-social impacts of hair restoration surgery on men at an annual meeting of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), an important event within the hair restoration society. A medical equipment company is also working on producing the Laxometer which was invented and perfected last year. The Laxometer was invented to help hair transplant surgeons safely and precisely harvest hair and to make hair transplant procedures safer for patients.

There have had many achievements through last year and we are proud to be able to offer our patients a variety of cosmetic treatments all under one roof. Our hair restoration clinics in Encino, Beverly Hills and most recently Orange County hair transplant office have made it easy for any of our Southern California residents to receive the procedures they want conveniently and affordably. We’ve even made it easy for outside of California and outside the United States patients to get high quality hair transplants with our convenient travel packages.
With all the financial struggles and challenges met last year in America and many other countries, we are proud to still be able to offer competitive and affordable hair transplants while maintaining our high standards. We also offer a variety of financing options with 0% financing for hair transplants for qualified patients.
I should thank my staff and surgical team for all the work and effort put into making this entire process as smooth and pleasant as possible. I am also glad to have made so many new friends throughout the year. I thank all my colleagues for all their referrals to me and all my patients for continually bragging about the service we’ve given them in the process of their hair restoration.

Transexual Hair transplant

We are seeing many patients who are not getting hair transplant for balding, but for change in their current non-balding pattern. One of those are transgender or transexual hair transplantation. Female to male hair transgender hair transplant is one of the most essential procedures in this process. The most important change that they need to have a more feminant face is a changing their hairline through a hair transplant. We at US Hair Restoration perform transgender hair transplant to change a male to female hairline.
There might be 2 major problems for male to female transgender patients The first is having receded frontal corners in mature male patterned hairline which is what makes the frame of the face "masculine". Receded corners can be easily restored with hair restoration through follicular unit transplantation. The second issue is when there is also miniaturization or balding of the rest of their hair in a male patterned baldness that may require further hair restoration. Taking anti-testosterone medications can help to slow down your hair loss, but it does not stop the balding process completely. Removing the testicles surgically as part of a transgender procedure can eliminate testosterone and, in turn, stop the process of androgenetic alopecia in people who are genetically prone to male pattern baldness.

Male mature hairline change to a feminie is differnt than restoring hair loss in a male pattern, but in both cases, a hair transplant can help you. Obviously, you need to continue with your anti-testosterone medications and get a hair transplant to reshape the frame of your face. You may need more than one hair transplant procedure for maximum fullness of the hairline in a perfect female pattern.
Hair transplantation for transgender is an important procedure and the hair transplant surgeon needs to understand your facial proportions. Your Hair transplant doctor needs to be experienced with shaping the hairline in women. Women hairline is different from male in many aspects such as: the location of the hairline from eyebrow level at mid frontal and laterals; temples need to be restored in a complete female shape; direction and orientation of hair shafts are also different between men and women. All these features and details of the patient face need to be dealt with closely by an experienced hair transplant surgeon.

Hair Transplant Hollywood

Many of my patients and the readers of our hair transplant blog often ask about celebrity hair transplants, their hair loss problems and hair restoration. California and in particular Los Angeles and Hollywood is the place for celebrities so hearing questions on celebrity hair transplantation is not unusual. We will not be able to reveal the name of the people who had a hair transplant; however gossip never sleeps in Hollywood.
Internet is full of the names of celebrities who many have had a hair transplant or plug surgery in the past. Many male celebrities with hair transplantation has been recognized and revealed by photographers. Many of celebrities had old and bad hair transplants and the others with the changes that were captured in the pictures from before and after hair transplants. Although wigs and hair systems have become very realistic these days, high resolution photography can reveal them at times. Many known celebrities had old technique hair transplants that used to be detectable and easy to distinguish. That is why they are bound to a certain hair style to cover their unnatural hairline. Many others have the problem fixed by doing a repair hair transplant using the follicular unit transplant. The good news is that many patients with unnatural hair line from old hair transplants could improve their appearance if their donor hair was not violated with old techniques of hair restoration or plug surgeries.
Hollywood, Los Angeles, Beverly Hills and Orange County are among the most concentrated areas in terms of the number of hair transplant surgeons. Keeping a good look in Hollywood world is not only important, but it could be life changing for many people especially if they are one of the people who is constantly followed by Paparazzi.

When Can We See Full Result After Hair Transplant

The first few months after hair transplant can be a crucial period for the patients who are anxious to see their new hair. We answer to our patients and other patients who underwent or planning to undergo a hair transplnt surgery in our hair transplant blog. This is one of thoese questions of patient who had a hair transplant about four months ago. Patient is anxious to see growth of his transplanted hair as soon as possible. He stated that he underwent a procedure four months ago and it has ben hard to tell the growth of hair.
Our hair transplant patient is curious to see why he can not see more hair at this level. He says: 2 months after the surgery I started using a buzzer on all unaffected areas of my head to balance out the length of the shave of the recipient area. I wasn’t totally bald before so eventually, my already existing hair in the front starting getting a little out of balance. I was pretty cautious about shaving the recipient area, so roughly around mid-December I started shaving it all to balance everything out. I also did it so I could monitor the improvement better, as it’s not easy when it’s uneven.
I think I have more hair than I used to, but it’s still barely half the density of all the surrounding hair on the sides and around the top, not the front, which is approximately half as dense. Could my lack of growth be the side effect of the finasteride. But I barely remember the holes being poked in the recipient area when my hair transplant doctor performed the procedure. One thing that concerns me is that I was never told exactly how many grafts were transplanted. It never really worried me until now.
I must admit that my doctor was very nice, and answered all of my questions. However, I must say that I’m not impressed. If you have similar question after hair transplant surgery, don’t panic. The growth of transplanted hair could be very gradual and full result may not be seen before one full year after hair transpaltn. Transplanted hair generally sheds in 90% of people and you do not see anything for about 3 months after the hair transplant surgery. After the third month you may start seeing growth of most transplanted hair. That is more obvious for the patients who do not have any hair at all.
My recommendation to these patient is to be patient and they will be surprised in a few montsh. We at our Orange County hair trnasplant clinic provide free consultation to all our patients before and after hair transpalnt srugery. People who already have some hair should not be able to see much before 6-8 months from the time of their surgery when transplanted hair is long and thick enough to be distinguished. I understand that you are anxious to see the final result as soon as possible, but you cannot rush the growth of grafts. I do not perform nor recommend doing a second procedure before 6 months from the previous hair transplant because many of the grafts are not even out at that time. Be patient and you will see your transplanted hair growing in a few months.

CCCA and hair transplant surgey

The hair loss condition, central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia or CCCA is one of the less common causes of balding that needs hair loss treatment. This medical condition, which characterizes with circular balding, mainly on the top (vertex and crown) which can be expanding and only leave a rim or hair around the scalp with total baldness in the more central areas in extreme cases (see picture).
The causes of this type of balding are now quite known. Here at US Hair Restoration a Los Angeles Hair Transplant Center we see CCCA on an occasional basis. This disease used to be called with different names such as hot comb alopecia, follicular degeneration syndrome, pseudopelade in African Americans and central elliptical pseudopelade in Caucasians. Microscopic evaluation of the hair loss areas shows evidences of inflammation in the area of disease activity, chronic and rapidly progressive skin changes with eventual complete baldness in some part of the scalp with its unique pattern.
This hair loss condition could be started with the evidences of skin inflammation (redness and itching), but this phase might be temporary and patient may not have any signs or symptoms other than hair loss with its specific pattern. Routine medical treatment of hair loss with finasteride (Propecia) or Minoxidil (Rogaine) are generally not beneficial.
Treatment of this condition could be challenging. Treatment with medications is generally not successful in prevention of the hair loss and to reverse the process. Hair transplant surgery could be an option, but it could not be done in the acute phase of the disease. Hair transplant surgeon need to consider hair restoration surgery for Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia when the active phase is over and when the inflammation is completely subsided. I would like to do a small test hair transplant before committing to the actual hair transplant surgery to be assured of the survival of the hair grafts.

Los Angeles Hair Transplant surgeon: How to pick one?

Exclusive search for a good Los Angeles hair transplant surgeon may not be an easy task. Los Angeles has always been the referral center for most cosmetic surgeries. Hair transplant surgery is one of the newer branches of cosmetic surgery. You can find a wide variety in style and levels of Beverly Hills hair transplant surgeons. Some of the most updated hair transplant surgeons practice in Los Angeles and San Diego, California, but you can also see lousy surgeries done by some hair transplant surgeons. Overall, hair restoration surgery like any other cosmetic surgery is a buyer’s beware market and one must be careful not to fall into the trap of signs such as Number one Beverly Hills hair transplant surgeon or the most experienced Los Angeles hair transplant surgeon. You can see similar advertisements and a lot more like Extreme make over hair transplant surgeon or doctor 90210.
The good news is that today, most of the hair transplant surgeons offer free initial consultation. You have to take advantage of this situation and shop around. It is your look and you need to live with it for the rest of your life after all. It is not enough to visit several hair transplant doctors; you also need to educate yourself on hair transplantation process, surgical techniques and hair transplant surgeon’s background before visiting the doctor. This way, you can appreciate a good technique and knowledgeable doctor when you see one. US Hair Restoration – a Los Angeles hair transplant surgery center offers free physician consultation for everyone.
If you know that Los Angeles is Hollywood you realize that in Hollywood look is everything. Modern hair transplant surgery with undetectable results has become a demanding field in Southern California in last few years both because of the number of people looking for hair restoration surgery and the ones looking for the best hair transplant surgeon in Los Angeles, Beverly Hills and Southern California over all. Many people travel the world to get their hair transplant surgery done in Los Angeles or Beverly Hills. Los Angeles is and will always be the Mecca of hair transplant surgery for people who cannot accept anything but the best.

Dr. Mohebi - A Los Angeles Hair Transplant Surgeon

One of the local Los Angeles Magazines just published an article titled “Treat your depression with hair transplant”. Yes, it is true and is based on the new released result of Dr. Mohebi’s study on psychology of hair transplant. Dr. Mohebi is medical director of US Hair Restoration. Dr. Parsa Mohebi is a fellowship trained hair restoration surgeon. He finished his hair restoration surgery fellowship with Dr. William Rassman, one true pioneer of modern hair transplant techniques.
Dr. Mohebi has studied in depth different psycho-social aspects of men who undergo hair transplant surgery for treatment of their hair loss. Dr. Mohebi has performed several other studies on the techniques of hair restoration. Dr. Parsa Mohebi is a performing hair restoration surgery in his Encino office in Los Angeles California.
Dr. Mohebi uses follicular unit transplantation for the best cosmetic result. Dr. Mohebi is a true believer of “being bald is an option now”. The goal of Dr. Mohebi and his experienced team is restoring more than just hair. Their quality hair transplant surgeries have returned hope to many men who are suffering from hair loss and its emotional scars.

Dr. Parsa Mohebi at US Hair Restoration performs megasessions on a regular basis

Dr. Parsa Mohebi at US Hair Restoration performs megasessions on a regular basis. Mega session hair transplant surgery has been around for almost a decade since Dr. Rassman and others started doing bigger and bigger sessions. Before 1993 all could be done was less than 1000 and occasionally 1500 grafts per each session. Using newer techniques and larger team of experienced technicians, we at US Hair Restoration are currently performing large sessions on a regular basis.

Dr. Parsa Mohebi is a fellowship trained hair transplant surgeon. Not all physician teams are equal. If a doctor routinely performs sessions in over 2500 graft size, then it would be safe to assume that this doctor has mastered the skills required for large session. Unfortunately, not all doctors have either the teams or the skills to accomplish the feat on a routine basis. Limiting the size of the session to under 2000 grafts, it may take more surgical sessions to accomplish the same goal as when twice the number is transplanted.
Many factors should come together for a megasession hair transplant surgery. First, the surgical team must be trained in doing large sessions with fast, efficient cutting and placing. The following points must be available for the surgery to be successful. The sessions should not take more than eight to ten hours, for more than that, the grafts that are out of the body awaiting placement produces reduced graft growth. Hair transplant surgeon should keep a larger team of technicians to help reducing the time of surgery.
The surgeon must know the nuances of prolonged anesthesia without increasing the risks to the patient. The patient’s scalp laxity must be very loose so that a wide strip can be taken safely (often these strips measure greater than 2cm in width and 22cm in length). The patient’s density must be high (50% higher than normal densities). Large sessions might carry increased risk of swelling and redness after surgery, but overall are not more risky than smaller sessions, but the above criteria must be bet or the yield would not be there. At US Hair Restoration, Dr. Mohebi offers megasessions to patients with extensive baldness with good donor quality with excellent results.

Hair Loss and Genetics and hair restoration
Researchers suspect that several genes inherited from both parents play a role in androgenetic alopecia. Paternal hair loss has been shown to correlate with chances of alopecia in sons, while variations in the androgen receptor gene (AR), which can also correlate with baldness, are X linked and thus inherited from one's maternal grandfather or grandmother or both. Hair transplant surgery in Los Angeles.
Receptors of Androgen allow the body to respond appropriately to dihydrotestosterone and other androgens. Studies suggest that variations in the AR gene lead to increased activity of androgen receptors in hair follicles. It remains unclear, however, how these genetic changes increase the incidence of patterned hair loss in men and women with androgenetic alopecia.
The inheritance pattern of androgenetic alopecia or male pattern baldness is unclear because many genetic and environmental factors are likely to be involved. This condition tends to cluster in families, however, and having a close relative with patterned hair loss appears to be a risk factor for developing the condition. For more on hair loss causes you can visit hair loss question and answer blog.

I generally prescribe finasteride to most of my patients who have significant miniaturization whether they are getting hair transplants or not. There are several studies on using Rogaine (minoxidil) and Propecia (finasteride) as single therapy and in combination with each other or with other medications.

Comparing minoxidil and finasteride for treatment of male pattern baldness clearly shows that treatment with only finasteride is more effective than treatment with only minoxidil. Combination of finasteride with minoxidil and with some other medications shows improved outcome, but the rate of improvement is not significant enough that I can convince myself to prescribe combination therapy to all my patients for the rest of their lives, considering difficulty of using topical minoxidil (topical spreading of medication twice a day on the balding area of scalp).
